From design to final result, give your hallway a makeover!
In the showroom at Designtegels we have different style rooms. In these rooms we show our new and popular tiles as they look best. Of course, these also have to be changed over time. Below you can see how we did this.
Let me introduce myself
Let me introduce myself, I am Anouk and recently an intern at Designtegels. During my internship I help with the changes in the showroom, the graphic work and with writing these fun blogs! Below you can read how you can easily give your hall a makeover.

The plan of the make over
The hallway looked completely different before the makeover. One of the walls had wooden slats glued on it, it was boring and the colours were outdated, time for a makeover! We got inspiration online, made a mood board, found a tile that fits the idea and we can start! It will be a hallway with tile wainscoting on one side and a coat rack over the entire length.

Where do you start with a makeover?
The first thing that had to be done was stripping the walls. While we were prying them loose, pieces of the wall had come loose. To make the walls smooth and even again, we filled the holes in the walls with filler. Immediately filled for the first time, super easy and an immediate neat result! The walls have become very smooth after filling and sanding a few times. To fully prepare the walls for tiling, we first treated them with primer. This way, you ensure that the wall does not absorb all the moisture from your tile adhesive. Quite important, because that way they actually stay on the wall.

First time tiling? That was easy!
With this good foundation we could start tiling. For me it was the first time, but I was really looking forward to it! After a clear explanation from my colleague I started and I soon found out that if you just have to do it, you learn it the fastest. The best thing about tiling is that you see the result while you are working. You see your hall becoming more beautiful while you are working.
After tiling, I painted the walls and grouted the tiles. Grouting was completely new to me, but not unimportant. Grouting the tiles ensures that no more dirt and moisture can get between the tiles. By using a dark grout colour in combination with a light tile, we have created a modern and contrasting effect. Now that the walls have been tiled and painted, the hall is already starting to get a completely new look. What a new tile and a lick of paint can do!
Looking for the coat rack or a DIY?
Above the wainscoting we wanted to hang a coat rack over the entire length of the hall. Our coat rack was 4 meters long. Finding such a long coat rack is not easy, after searching the internet and the shops we came to the conclusion that we could not find anything we wanted. And certainly not within budget, so that means: A DIY!With my creative-all-rounder-colleague we figured out the dimensions and the look. The base of the coat rack consists of a sheet of birch wood that we sawed to size. For the hooks we used an old stair gate. We sawed the bars of this to size and glued them into the holes that we had drilled in the long plank. There you go, for a small budget and a bit of creativity you can have the perfect coat rack!
Let's style it!
The hall is almost finished: New paint, new tiles and a custom-made coat rack. The hall has a completely different look! But let's be honest, with the finishing you really put the finishing touches on it. We wanted to decorate the hall in a cozy, homely way with natural materials and colors. We could add some nice items to the coat rack itself and to the shelf above it. With a small budget we went shopping and bought scarves, ponchos, umbrellas, dried flowers, greenery at budget stores. Makeover successful!
