Production of the Spanish tiles

The production of Spanish tiles is a fascinating process that combines centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship with modern industrial techniques. Although not all Spanish tiles are completely handmade these days, great attention is still paid to every detail during the manufacturing process. This attention to quality and aesthetics is what makes Spanish tiles so popular, both in traditional and contemporary interiors.

The process begins with carefully selected raw materials, such as clay and minerals, which are mixed together to form a strong and durable base. This clay is molded or pressed into the desired shape, depending on the design. The biscuits are placed on a production line, where they undergo a series of steps that each contribute to their final appearance and quality.

An important step in the process is the application of the glaze. The tiles move on a rubber conveyor belt through an automated system, passing under a waterfall of glaze. This glaze is evenly distributed over the surface.

The tiles are then placed on drying racks to allow the glaze to harden before being fired. Once the glaze has hardened sufficiently, the tiles are transferred to a special kiln. The tiles are guided through the kiln at different speeds using rollers and sticks. This ensures that some tiles are exposed to the heat for longer than others. The result? Subtle colour nuances between the tiles, giving each one a unique look. This process ensures that each tile has a unique charm, with a mix of traditional looks and modern production techniques.
