Production of Terrazzo
The production of Terrazzo tiles is a process that combines age-old traditions with the technology of modern factories. In the 1930s, the material was cast in molds on site, after which the tiles were finished by hand. However, current production methods have changed considerably with the advent of advanced machinery and specialized factories, which allow for even more precise and efficient production.
The process begins with the composition of the terrazzo mixture, an important step that lays the foundation for the quality of the final tile. The pebbles, which are an essential part of terrazzo, are carefully selected. These pebbles can consist of marble, glass, or other materials, and are purchased in various shapes and colors to achieve the desired aesthetic. After selecting the right pebbles, they are mixed with other materials such as concrete, marble powder, or other stone fragments. This not only provides the typical appearance of terrazzo, but also the strength and durability of the tiles.
The mixture is then poured into molds, which determine the shape of the final tiles. After pouring, the mixture is pressed under high pressure to ensure that the pebbles are evenly distributed and that the mixture adheres well. This process requires precision, as the pressure and mixing ratio have a major impact on the strength and appearance of the tiles. After the tiles have been pressed, they are carefully placed on drying racks. Here they are given time to fully harden, which can take several days, depending on the size and thickness of the tiles.
After the tiles have fully hardened, they undergo a polishing process, which gives them a smooth surface. The end result is a sturdy, versatile and aesthetically pleasing tile that can play a prominent role in both modern and classic interior designs.
