How is Terrazzo made
Where does Terrazzo come from?
Terrazzo is back! This classic decoration is centuries old and was used as a cheaper terrace covering for large buildings such as churches and other historical buildings. The remains from the marble quarry were poured between the concrete. When the floors were walked on a lot, they were polished in a natural way, so to speak, and the small pieces of granite and marble became visible. People found this so beautiful that more and more floors were poured in this way.
How is it made?
The technique they used over 500 years ago is still the same that we use to this day. We can now only choose from a variety of colors, grains and finishes of your Terrazzo. Now the tiles are machine polished until you have the finish you want.
How sustainable is Terrazzo?
Terrazzo can be made from any waste product. In addition to marble granules (leftovers), you can also use plastic, glass or other waste materials to get the fun colorful speckles in the concrete. Terrazzo is also extremely impact and scratch resistant! The Terrazzo from Designtegels is also impregnated in the factory so that it is stain-free for the first 10 years. And the longer the tiles are laid, the more beautiful the floor becomes!
Terrazzo tiles
In the past, labor was relatively cheap and you had professionals who specialized in placing terrazzo floors. Just like concrete is poured now, this was done with a special mix of granules and concrete, usually with an edge and decorations in different colors. After this had dried, the floor was polished. This gave you a terrazzo floor in one piece. Because this is now too labor-intensive and practical, especially for small spaces, we have Terrazzo tiles in our collection. These are easier to lay on the floor and you can also place them on the wall! You can also choose different colors to finish the edges.
