The difference between Moroccan and Spanish tiles

Moroccan and Spanish tiles are both very popular in the market. They both have a wide range of cheerful colours that will definitely give your interior a boost. But what is the difference?

Moroccan tiles

Moroccan tiles are known for being made entirely by hand. Special clay is sought that they knead into a certain shape. They then let the shapes dry in the sun. After the tiles have dried, they are chipped by hand. The edges of the tiles can therefore sometimes be sharp, but this creates a playful effect. After they have been chipped, a colored glaze layer is applied that they let dry in the ovens. They have to keep the oven going with fire themselves. Because the temperature of the oven can vary, no tile is the same. That is what makes all Moroccan tiles so unique.

Spanish tiles

Spanish tiles can be recognized by all the cheerful bright colors. They also get a lot of help from machines. The clay is poured into a mold so that the tiles all have the same shape. Then the shapes are dried in the gas oven. They can set the temperature of the oven, so that they can determine how the tiles come out. Then colorants are added in a machine and then they are placed back in the oven to dry. Because most of it is done with machines, they are largely identical. Spanish tiles can sometimes differ slightly in color per batch. Sometimes the colors of the chemicals deviate slightly. So always buy enough, because it is possible that if you get it from 2 different batches the colors are not exactly the same.

Which one to choose now?

Every Moroccan tile is different and that makes them so special. Some people like Moroccan tiles, but hesitate because it is never certain how the color will turn out and because the pips are sometimes not completely straight. So do you like those tiles but do you want a slightly safer option? Then a Spanish tile is the perfect solution for you!
