How to combine tiles!

1 October 2021

Want to give your interior a big boost, but don't know where to start? How about combining tiles! Combining tiles is one of the most enjoyable things you can do. It creates a great effect very quickly and is super simple to do.

We wanted to give a room in our Breda showroom a big boost. We came up with the idea of tiling the wall with lots of different tiles. Not different colours, but different heights, widths and thicknesses for a playful effect. To put the idea into practice, we started by laying the tiles out on the floor. It was a bit of a puzzle, but this meant we could move each tile around as often as we liked until we were happy with the arrangement.

Once we knew which tile went where, we took a photo and printed it out. This meant we could see exactly where each tile needed to go while tiling. We deliberately used a fast-drying adhesive so that the tiles could not slide or fall down the wall. Because the adhesive dried quickly, we had to work fast. That is why we took the photo: so we could tile away without having to think about where each tile needed to be placed. After applying the adhesive with a notched trowel, we got to work and stuck on all the tiles one by one. It felt like a craft project and was great fun.

After five hours of sticking tiles, we finally reached the very last one. The effect was fantastic! Once we had left the adhesive to dry for a day, it was time to grout. It seemed like quite a challenge with all the different types of tiles. Some tiles protrude, while others are much thicker… But once we got started, it was not as difficult as we had expected, and we were immediately delighted with the result. Because, let's be honest, surely this finished result would put a smile on anyone's face!
Soon, we will show you how we finish this room with lovely furniture and home accessories. Stay tuned!
